Juliette Binoche
Happy birthday to Ms Juliette Binoche, consummate artist and... well... what's not love?
I made a list at Amazon to keep track of this actress's oeuvre as her films are released in digital format. I hope it will assist more of the English-speaking audience that enjoyed her work in The English Patient and Chocolat to find more of the films that establish her as a leading cinematic artist.
At the top of the list I placed Three Colors: Blue. The vision is Krzysztof Kieslowski's and Binoche carries it. She is in every scene, words are few, and nearly all the most important action is fiercely internal. A film like this could have fallen short in a thousand ways but, thanks to the collaboration of an exceptional actress and an exceptional director, the result is a masterpiece.
It's worth mentioning that Binoche turned down Stephen Spielberg to make Blue. The role she declined, Dr Ellie Sattler in Jurassic Park, would have gone much further to make her a household name than Blue, which played in arts cinemas. But the choice is characteristic. It was neither the first nor the last time she would say no to Hollywood.

If a star is someone who gives light, then I can be a star. But if a star is someone who goes after money and magazine covers then it's sick and I don't want it!
